OHSAA Regionals
The OHSAA Regional round is finished, and now comes States. But before Mogadore and the rest of the teams across the state step on the field on Friday and Saturday night, we want to take a look back at the Regionals.
Five teams in the PTC made the playoffs this year, and slowly but surely, four of the five teams fell. Chagrin Falls knocked two teams out of the playoffs, Roosevelt didn't know where their first round game would end up being played, and Mogadore showed what they could do early on and haven't stopped winning since. Below you can find all the first round action, every game, with a couple previews thrown in for good measure.

Greenmen run over the Rough Riders
By: Bill Hughes
In the second round of the OHSAA division 2 play-offs the Aurora Greenmen rolled over the Rough Riders 27-13.
The Greenmen came out on fire forcing Roosevelt to punt on the fourth play of the game. Just three plays later Jake McVay scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night with a 51-yard run.
Joey Melchiori, the sophomore kicker for Aurora, missed his extra-point attempt giving life back to the Roosevelt sideline. Yet again Aurora showed superiority forcing Roosevelt to punt for the second time in just eight plays of offense.
Roosevelt would recover a forced fumble to spring to life; however, after 41-yards of solid production Aurora forced a turnover on downs on the Greenmen’s 20-yard line.
This would not be the last lost opportunity for the Rough Riders.
After an intentional grounding call Aurora punted away and downed it on Roosevelt’s 3-yard line. Though only being down 6-0 Roosevelt needed something to happen and for it to happen fast.
Tra’Von Chapman converted a key 19-yard run on a daunting third and 10 bringing the ball to Aurora’s 11-yard line. On the next play Chapman finished a nine play 97-yard drive by finding Trei Thomas in the end zone for the score. After the extra point Roosevelt went on top 7-6.
Jose Rocha hit two key field goals of 43- and 34-yards sending the game into the half tied at 13.
Four minutes into the third quarter Alex Smierciak intercepted a pass from Chapman and took it 75-yards for the touchdown putting the Greenmen up 20-13.
The Rough Riders would not come back from that allowing Zach Quinn to break free for a 77-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
With 1:34 left in the game Chapman threw his 33rd incomplete pass on the night turning the ball over on downs for the second time in the game.
Roosevelt Head Coach John Nemec and his team reacted with strong emotions when the clock hit zero.
“I’m proud of our kids, but I do know this, we got beat straight up, that was a pretty powerful team,” Nemec said.
The Rough Riders finish the season at 10-2.
Roosevelt-Aurora Preview
Win and survive. That's the name of the game for both the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders and the Aurora Greenmen. Sounds simple enough, right?
You have to look at which team has the advantages, and it's not exactly obvious who has them. The Greenmen have an explosive offense that piles up the points at will (41.7 ppg). But the Rough Riders offense isn't exactly a ground and pound game, they average 33.4 ppg.

Kent Roosevelt defeats Akron Ellet in first round playoff action
By: Bill Hughes
A rough first half for the Rough Riders allowed them to come out and dominate the second half en route to defeating Ellet 24-7
Corey Spicer gave life to Roosevelt’s miserable first half intercepting a pass from Jake Fisher returning it 89-yards for Roosevelt’s first score of the game.
“I don’t even know, I thought that one’s mine,” Spicer said. “I’m going to the house. It was all team today.”
“Corey Spicer is an outstanding athlete,” Head coach John Nemec said. “He made a great play.”
Tra’Von Chapman completed 10-23 passes for 183 yards Friday night. He connected with Trei Thomas four of those times on the way for Thomas to add 132 yards to his year total, which now passes 1,000 yards.
“It feels great to have reached it,” Thomas said. “I can thank my entire team.”
“I’m really lucky to have them on my side,” Nemec said.
Thomas had two receiving touchdowns on the night both over 50 yards.
The Orangemen came out with victory in their eyes. On the first drive of the game Matt Geer rushed 12-yards for the first touchdown of the game.
On Roosevelt’s first play of the game Chapman threw an interception to Cle’von Burch who returned it 15-yards.
Roosevelt came out firing on all cylinders in the second half airing it out for their second playoff win in school history.
The Rough Riders will take on the Aurora Greenmen in the regional semifinals of OHSAA Division II state playoff action next weekend.
Kent Roosevelt-Akron Ellet Preview
On Friday night, the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders (9-1) will take on the Akron-Ellet Orangemen (8-2) and though it's still technically a home game, the Rough Riders will face Ellet at Kent State University's Dix Stadium.
Hurrican Sandy has affected many places across the country, and Portage County is no different. Due to the inclement weather, the game was moved not once, but twice today in order to find a proper location.
The game was first moved to Stow High School, the site of the Riders lone loss this season, before being moved to Dix Stadium. The athletic department thought that it gave the Kent City community a better chance to be a part of the game, keeping it in town.
